Review : Canon PowerShot S5 IS

These are the two cameras I’ve been weighing, and I think I’ve decided on one.

Ah girl suggested that we buy the camera together, but .. I kinda declined cause yeah .. don’t need la. I think I have enough to cover. Plus, it’s my own hobby ..

I’m planning to go back to photography. Especially with the new developments in my life, I would really want to capture as much as I can so that one day, when I’m too old to remember .. I have some slideshows to help.

So it begins .. my search for the camera!

Guess which one I’ve decided on!

Well…there’s a camera fair in Queensbay but you’re in KL

    me thinks canon…

coz me thinks canon kicks lumix’s shiny arse… :P

  4. 4 K.Lo

but then again the panasonic is pretty good… (after reading a couple of reviews) hehe but it is about what a thousand ringgit more expensive?

hmm hmm… to me, you’ll never go wrong with a canon but if i were you, i might forego brand for the panasonic’s leica lens…

    FASTER REPLY!!! :P

KLo, you sound less sure of yourself .. how come? :p

Yeah, the Panasonic Lumix has quite an advantage .. with Leica’s BRIGHT lens, with ring zoom/focus instead of the Canon’s toggle thingi ..

And .. it’s not that much more expensive, actually.

Scouting for some good deals .. now.

Yup. I’m with the Panasonic. With it’s BRIGHT FLASH that works a good 2 meters more than the Canon’s.

haha coz i read the reviews… hehe

but i dunno man… the question really is if Canon can bring some of its slr tech into the S5 and if Panasonic has foregone its slr tech enough to focus on a niche market that is the super zoom…

maybe it has… what;s the Canon toggle thing?
n u sure Panasonic has that kinda flash?

  7. 7 ahboy

HMm.. The FZ50 has a ring zoom/focus mechanism, but the S5 IS requires the user to use the toggle thing to zoom/focus .. Which is SLR-LIKE. :)

    iLike.

I’ve just checked prices .. it’s about RM500 more expensive!

hmmm… dont know much about cameras, but i do know there’s a shop in Amcorp Mall selling second hand la. hahahahahaa… the uncle quite nice one, think the name is Jason or something. and the shop name is…One stop or… one… something lah!!! if you kacau him a bit then he will give discount, hahahahaa…. thats what my friend did la. hee… :)

I guess I’m still more on the Fuji S5700 because of the 10x optical zoom. I know Fuji is less wellknown in the camera world.
Anyway, the other is Nikon D80. When I my friend was over from US, he brought his Nikon D80 and I held it and played around with it. Really cool camera…But price is also cool!!

john_gan: I might go check it out .. hehe. Thanks for the tip!

Mei Yen : The Fujifilm’s Super CCD is very impressive. High ISO settings with very little noise. Worth the consideration .. but .. I still like Panasonic le .. :p

Bro, u mean the Panasonic is more SLR-like issit?
(coz u said the toggle is more SLR-LIKE? O_o)

icic 500bux more just for this feature is pretty ok i reckon ;)

  12. 12 ahboy

Whoops. Yeah .. the FZ50 is SLR-like lor. Hmm.. see how la. Checking prices now.

Don’t know anything about cameras but liked the thought ah girl had on sharing the camera, it shows how conciderate she is :)

Fuji megazoom useless without OIS/AS that’s why never put Fuji in my lists before…

my next step up would be the Lumix… i should have bought the FZ30 last time… *sigh… difference of only RM200-300 but i got the KMZ6 instead… no regrets though… it focuses real fast… that caught my attention… but KMs out of the biz now…

  15. 15 DavidLee

Yeah, Mega OIS on the Panasonic and the IS on Canon will definitely help in mega zoom mode.

KMs are part of Sony now .. Muahahahaha. Buy the Sony Alpha!

But anyhow, everyone .. your attention please! Due to some some “unseen” influence, I’ve allocated the money for something else, and secondly, the Panasonic Lumix FZ50 is obsolete! [suspiciously .. linked to the "unseen" influence .. I think .. :p]

So yeah, trusting the “unseen” influence to provide!

    hey..how much is s5 priced?

  17. 17 DavidLee

The S5 IS, last I checked a month ago was RM1699, without batteries. Canon’s pricing is controlled, so the only bargain is to .. haggle for more accessories.
