Nokia E71

I can’t believe I’m writing about this, and I can’t believe I’m actually considering this .. but ..

How’s the Nokia E71 Series 60 Symbian phone?

I know I know, people have known me to be a Nokia basher, but read my thoughts on it, okays?

At a glance,

  • Successor of Nokia E61i
  • Construction and design Nokia E51 style (steel back cover, metal frame)
  • Mere 10mm thickness (measures 57 x 112 x 10mm and weighs 120 grams)
  • 2.36″ QVGA (320 x 240) display
  • Full QWERTY keyboard
  • Symbian S60 9.2 (Feature Pack 1) with some of the Feature Pack 2 niceties
  • Quad-band GSM, 3G with HSDPA
  • WiFi, stereo Bluetooth (A2DP and EDR)
  • GPS receiver with A-GPS support and Nokia Maps application
  • microSD card slot (up to 8GB)
  • 1500 mAh battery
  • 3.2 megapixel camera with auto focus and LED flash, records VGA video at 22 fps
  • Enhanced email support, data encryption, mobile VPN

Hmm .. Guess I’m looking for a business phone with a QWERTY keyboard, GPS capabilities (for the travelling), and good battery life.

Others I’ve considered:

  • HTC Titan Tytn II (Fat, QWERTY, but lack GPS)
  • HTC Touch Pro (Has everything, but new & expensive)
  • Sony Ericsson P1i (Solid phone, but QUIRKY QWERTY keyboard, lack GPS)
  • iPhone (Still not available, but lack keyboard. UBER UBER COOL THOUGH)

Sigh. I’m becoming more business driven now!

Here are some reviews:

    hello, moto! Q9…
plus: haven’t been here so long, just noticed my bad-hair-day picture link.

Is this a new model? I am actually consideirng the E61i but didn’t know they came out with a new model instead.

eelxela: Hmm .. we have a few Q9s in the office, and it’s not that impressive. Yeah sure, it’s slim and all .. but it’s on WM6, which is stable now .. but I guess .. I’m also looking at a change of platforms.

Tried Palm, PPC2003, and WM, but haven’t tried Symbian!

Kevin: Yeah, there’s a new one, but it hasn’t been launched in Malaysia. Was thinking of going to Singapore to get it, but .. well .. let’s just say I’m thinking about how to get the money first. Heh.

Retails for SGD$798 .. so that works out to be RM1,875 .. yikes. Though, still cheaper than .. TyTn II .. secondhand though.

Anyhows, updated the entry with some reviews. Check them out!

You like those with keyboard ah?
I find this Nokia model too wide for my liking.
I prefer those with Stylus. :)

  5. 5 David

A Yen: Well, if you use the stylus, you can’t write SMSes when you’re driving .. it’s slower compared to tapping on keys. Not to mention, more accurate too! Less errors.

But .. to each .. their own!

I am currently using the o2 atom. Dissadvantage is it gets abit inconvenient when it comes to smsing. those with keys are much convenient, especially when you’re running around and want to send a quick sms out. - hence i am considering something with keys.

the features are the same with the E61i rite? any difference? how’s the design? I have not looked at the new one yet. hope it is not too big to put into the pocket!

  7. 7 David

Kevin: I’m using the O2 Mini (super old ..). You’re right about the SMSing part.

Read the posted reviews la .. they should give you a much better picture.

  8. 8 Kevin

Is not launched here until today? I want to look at the real thing. It should be slimmer and lighter than our o2 rite?

  9. 9 David

Nope, it hasn’t been launched. It’s definitely slimmer and lighter. It’s 1cm thick. READ THE REVIEW LA. Hahaha.

  10. 10 Kevin

When iizzit launching here in Malaysia?

eh 1cm is freakin thin and light rite?

  11. 11 David

Hmm .. don’t know la. But it you’re in Singapore, you should be able to get it.

Yup. It’s light, thin and has long battery life. Read the reviewssssss! Especially the first one.

    Kevin!

I was at the Nokia shop at The Curve today, and they had the E71! There was a demo set, but the lady there had a working phone with her .. and I tested it out and it’s FABULOUS!!

    Sigh. Kena bitten already.
