I was browsing on the internet, looking for cheap accommodation in Semporna as I was planning to spend a day or two more than I expected since I had quite a bit of time at hand. While looking through some blogs, I came across this one entry that was on Uncle Tan’s Wildlife Adventure. I read on about it, and found it interesting! The person who went was also raving about it and I decided to get more information about it. So I googled for Uncle Tan’s Wildlife Adventure, and found the website for it.
I looked around the site, read what was available, and the 3D/2N package sounded really fun. Then I saw the price. It was RM280 for the trip, plus I needed to get to Sandakan because their operations base was near the town. Then I thought for a moment. If I was to fly to Tawau from KK direct, the air fare would come up to quite a bit, and that wouldn’t be money well spent … compared with spending it on the trip to the jungle! So I called the mobile number given and made arrangements. Got information on how I was to get to the operations camp at Gum Gum, and I was told to take a bus. Having heard how the roads are, I was slightly afraid … but well, I guess I could rough it out. I was more worried about the luggage I was carrying though. Hehe. Laptop and all. Gah. Now, out of town it’s more of a burden than a blessing. When I was in town, it was great! Wireless internet connection at Jon’s place 24/7 .. air-conditioning and all. Jungle? Useless piece of metal with spinning discs. Haha.
Ernest’s Dad helped me get the bus ticket and I packed up, with my freshly dried clothes and went off on a 6 hour bus journey. I was pretty excited, once I got on the bus, but when the bus driver pulled over a couple of times .. on one occasion even bringing a spanner down to fix something! Gosh. Worried. Then… the airconditioning decided to break down. That was bad. Travelling in the outskirt of town, with the sun scorching .. the bus felt like an oven. It was funny … when I was reminded of the time I was up in the dorm room in Laban Rata, when I was half naked at 3300 meters. Hehehe. Anyhow, I arrived after 6 hours, to this little town called Gum Gum where Uncle Tan’s operations base is.
My Uncle Tan’s Wildlife Adventure began on Tuesday, when I took a bus from the long distance bus terminal near Ernest’s place. The bus left at 11:30 am, and off I headed to Sandakan. The operations base is at Gum Gum, somewhere out of Sandakan town, and I was to be dropped off there. The bus trip is supposedly 6 hours, but I didn’t know how far Gum Gum was from the town of Sandakan so I had no idea how long I was gonna be on the bus. Well, no matter .. as I’ve got my trusty SD card MP3 player with 1GB card of music, and the book I am currently reading, Darlene Zschech’s Extravagant Worship. Really good book.
The bus was half empty, so I guess that’s a good thing because more people equals more weight. More weight equals more wear and stress on the tires. More stress on tires means kablam. Bus trouble. Scary, frustrating stuff man. You don’t wanna be caught in such situation. You know .. all these thoughts about bus trouble .. really freaks me out, considering the condition of the one and only road to the east coast side of Sabah.
Well, good news is .. the tires lasted all the way, and we didn’t have any trouble with it. Bad news is .. it wasn’t the tires that broke down. It was the air-conditioning. Bloody SHARKS! [something I learnt from the Aussies] Just when we passed Kundasang, which is like Cameron Highlands back in Peninsular Malaysia only a lot higher and foggier, the air-conditioning decided to stop working. At first, it wasn’t too bad because we were still in highlands, but as we got lower to sea level it got unbearable. To cut the long story short, I spent 4 hours in a bus without air-conditioning. Do you feel for me? Nah. I hope not. You sure wouldn’t want to be found in such predicament.
Arriving at Uncle Tan’s operations camp at Gum Gum, which doubles up as a B&B place, was acquainted with the staff on duty, Saidi. Not only have I been mistaken for other races, I’ve also been mistaken for being an older guy. No relation to when I joined the middle-aged men group up Mount Kinabalu, I assure you. Saidi said I sounded much older over the phone. Like, much much older. Hmm. There was this Holland guy there who was also on the same package. He’s a PhD student in Chemistry and he’s been backpacking for 3 weeks in Malaysia. He’s only a year older than I am, which kinda makes me wonder if I’ve been on the right track all these years. Maybe if my mom had ate more onions [supposed brain food] while she was pregnant … hmm. GAH. We were shown to our bunks and the first thing I did was get naked. Well, only half. Gotcha! My new red long sleeve Adidas Soccer t-shirt, drenched in sweat. The savior of my laundry problems, only to end up in the same pile.
Dinner was good, and so was the rest later that night.
